I am currently working on a project using PyAudio and am receiving the above error when I try to run the following code:

The desired output would be for the program to record a short 5 second clip and save it as a wav file named "test.wav".

I have tried to reinstall ALSA as well as change my ALSA configuration file which currently looks like this:

pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "null"
}

ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
}

I have also tried listing the valid card indices available on my machine which gave me the index 0.

I am currently running Arch Linux and am using Github Codespaces via Visual Studio Code to run the program.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Isn't github codespaces on github's servers? So it's trying to access the sound card of github's server, which it doesn't have? – imad.nyc May 11 '23 at 17:09
  • I assumed so but I received the same error when running the program locally as well. – thenewwkidd May 11 '23 at 17:17
  • Did you try to see if any sound cards are actually available on your system? Try `arecord -l` for that. This command should list sound cards ready for recording. – Antoni May 12 '23 at 13:01
  • Your ALSA configuration doesn't seem to be correct. The default device has a slave.pcm of "null", does such pcm actually exist on your device? It may also help to checkout which devices are visible to PyAudio with `get_device_count()` and `get_device_info_by_index()`. – Antoni May 12 '23 at 13:08
  • @Antoni I was able to list my sound cards.   • These messages are output by PortAudio when it tries to search for devices that do not actually exist; they are not actual errors. See https://stackoverflow.com/a/17673011/11654 for how to suppress them. – CL. May 13 '23 at 08:49
