Since L2TP/PPTP VPN connections are not supported on Android 13 anymore, I am wondering how to setup secure VPN connection between Mikrotik router and Android 13 device using native client which has only these options:

  1. IKEv2/IPSec MSCHAPv2
  2. IKEv2/IPSec PSK
  3. IKEv2/IPSec RSA

I was unable to find any solution for this problem so far...

I looked into this for a little bit, but I didn't quite seem to find anything that worked with the native vpn client coming with Android 13 nowadays. But, luckily my tp-link router came with built-in OpenVPN support, and was able to set up a connection quite fast and easy without any real setup.

It might not be quite what you were looking for, but if your Mikrotik router supports it, I would highly recommend giving it a try.

I hope Android starts opening up some more VPN methods soon, because having to find loops around every single vpn setup is getting tiring.

  • Thanks for the tip, but I am already working with VPN connection on router level as a workaround. However it would be nice to make VPN tunnel directly from android. – Bart Aug 02 '23 at 00:24
  • @Ruben mikrotik ikev2 VPN server (with cert auth) is working nice with build in android client - just tested with colleague – Facty Aug 27 '23 at 17:35
  • That's great @Facty, maybe Bart could try that if you have some setup information on it? It's been quite a while ago since I used mikrotik for work, so I can't do any testing myself. I just remember stumbling upon this post while trying to get some answers for myself and wanted to give some advice for a workaround. But it seems a router workaround is the most common "fix" nowadays. Thanks for your input tho, it's always nice hearing that people get vpns to work with android natively since they butchered alot of the useful VPN protocols on new updates. – Ruben Sep 01 '23 at 12:52
