"Cannot find symbol" when using jar packaging

Question

I have a spring boot app and I want to package it as a fat-jar. I changed the packaging from pom to jar, however when I run mvn clean package I get a lot of "cannot find symbol" errors.

Here is just an example of where it cannot find symbol:

ConnectionParams is a class that is defined within the application itself.

What's also confusing me is that I cannot even run it from Intellij when I change the packaging to jar. Any ideas why this is?
