I am building an app where I'd like to store user information locally on the device, without using any server database - but everything on the device side. I am looking to store specific user locations and show it in a table view, and so even when the user launches the app later - I can pull the history and feed the history table with the past locations. Basically a read/write capability from a local database.

Now, I know that there were many questions like that before but I could not find one that addresses saving data locally without an external data base. I am not sure, for example, that using Core Data is the correct and simplest thing to do here.

Would appreciate any advice on that.

  • If the problem is solved, you should check your question as solved and choose an answer to help people in the future with the same problem – Sr.Richie Nov 08 '11 at 15:07
  • hey @TommyG storing transactional records, in your case location information better to use external database like SqLite or CoreDate rather than using NSUserDefaults [https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/Cocoa/Reference/Foundation/Classes/NSUserDefaults_Class/]. So to make your life easier how about trying an ORM library like https://github.com/LakithaRav/OLCOrm to get the job done. – Laky Aug 03 '16 at 05:54

For simple data you should use NSUserDefaults. CoreData is very cool but mainly to store DB structures, and introduces complexity (but i love it:)). If you just need to store String, Array and so on (basically prefs), you can go with NSUserDefaults:

For example:

NSUserDefaults *prefs = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; //load NSUserDefaults
NSArray *fakeFavs = [[ NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"2",@"4", @"100", nil]; //declare array to be stored in NSUserDefaults
[prefs setObject:fakeFavs forKey:@"favourites"]; //set the prev Array for key value "favourites"

thanks! how do i read this array back when the app launches again? – TommyG Nov 08 '11 at 04:29

    NSUserDefaults *prefs = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; NSMutableArray *favorites = [prefs arrayForKey:@"favourites"]; – Sr.Richie Nov 08 '11 at 09:18

In addition to Sr.Richie's comment, it's imperative to get a mutable copy of the stored array if you want to add/remove objects. `NSUserDefaults *prefs = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; NSMutableArray *favorites = [[prefs arrayForKey:@"favourites"] mutableCopy];` – DigitalNinja Nov 04 '15 at 21:00

You have basically two options to store data:

  1. CoreData (if you are planning to use newer versions of iOS)
  2. SQLite (supports any version of the SDK)

CoreData uses SQLite, its API is a little bit easier to use (you don't need to know SQL or write a lot of functions to read and write your data).

SQLite API is still a great choice, since it uses the C API for SQLite, which is very well documented and straightforward to use. It has the benefit that you can target older iOS platforms with this.

With both options, data will be stored client side, and will be backed every time user syncs his/her phone with iTunes.

  • isnt SQLite used when you have a data base on a server somewhere? I only need to store one object locally and read it / write to it. – TommyG Nov 07 '11 at 17:25
  • @TommyG: Nope. Even though you could technically use SQLite in a server, I would highly discourage you from doing that. It lacks of good concurrent access support. SQLite is a mobile database API aimed to be used in single user environments, such as iPhone, Android Phones or simple desktop applications. CoreData uses it behind stage. – Pablo Santa Cruz Nov 07 '11 at 17:28

You have a few different ways to store application data on your iPhone.

  1. Plist files
  2. NSUserDefaults
  3. UserDefault
  4. File System
  5. CoreData
  6. SQLite DB

if you just storing a few values and don't need any search logic, you could take a look into NSUserDefaults

[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]

its just an dictionary where you can store arrays, strings, int, objects and access by a NSString key

internally it's a just plist, so you can open it with xcode to quicky see the current state

  • can i write to it a an array of strings, then read it next time the user opens the app? thats what i need basically. i looked into core data, and honestly for what i need its an overkill... – TommyG Nov 08 '11 at 00:30
  • Yes, you can write an array of strings. [[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] setObject:myArray forKey:@"myKey"] and then read it back with NSArray *myArray = [[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] objectForKey:@"myKey"]; – EricS Nov 08 '11 at 01:35
  • yes and it is persisted automatically. that means if the user or ios closes the app, your data is still there. and also backuped by itunes – JeanLuc Nov 08 '11 at 09:03
