Working on variations of the Maxwell equations using quaternions and hypercomplex numbers to unify a rank 1 field theory for gravity with the symmetries found in the standard model. Simpler is good, but tough to pull off [a rank 1 field theory for gravity is simpler than GR, and $U(1) \lhd SU(2) \lhd SU(3)$ - subgroups - is simpler than $U(1) X SU(2) X SU(3)$ - tensor products.
