I learned programming on a System 3 by IBM, very far back into the dark ages of programming, when it was the punch cards on the 5786, I believe it was called. Back then you had to write your code out, then go enter all the code on individual cards which were each punched out on a separate card, hence you could have a 500 or more card program to run it all into the System 3.
