I typically use J ( http://jsoftware.com ) language for working on statistical and mathematical problems. That is backed up up by recourse to SAS and (sometimes) R.

However, after the well defined J language, R is essentially a dog's breakfast. The advantage of R is the enormous library of functions available. The disadvantage is the language itself, the often inconsistent functions and the various pieces of magic that can confuse even experienced users.
