Hiya! I'm a filthy grease monkey, who lived underwater for 4.5 years. I got tired of cleaning wrenches and taught myself to code. Not much has changed, I suppose. I just clean databases now.
I basically grew up in the Matrix. My first program was written on an IBM PC Jr. in BASIC. I got in trouble in 6th grade for hacking the Mac Classic II's. In 12th grade, I climbed out a window in Discrete Math class because the teacher wouldn't let me go to the bathroom. I set a record at the Naval Nuclear Power School in Charleston, SC; I was the lowest passing score in the school's history.
At Curtiss-Wright, I wrote the service department's sales software in C#(Yuck!). Then, a radiant beam of light descended upon me. It was at that moment that our Heavenly Father, Yukihiro Matsumoto, showed me the beauty of Ruby. I have forever since been a faithful disciple. I went on to rewrite the sales department's entire pipeline and quote generation software before going back to school.
I finished my degree in Nuclear Engineering Technology. Yes, I am well aware of how unrelated and useless this degree is to my profession. My tenure in academia did teach me some valuable lessons in patience.
I got tired of being an impoverished student and went to work for Comcast. I built a platform called MOXIE which provided high-level mappings of network topography to customer data. This was a project born out of a long-standing company pain point, a gaping wound begging for a suture. Having to update billions of records every day acted as an effective school for scalable queries and procedural Postgres (PL/pgSQL).
Now I work fully remote as a BE Engineer for Weedmaps where I am being challenged more than I ever thought possible. Onwards and upwards!
Cool beans!
