Some people prefer writing code, I find and reproduce bugs in complex systems, then coordinate with the software engineers to get them fixed. I can write code (but prefer writing the algorithms), be sysadmin, re-architect an 80 server AWS batch job that takes 5 days to run on 3 servers in 1-2 days, and fix security holes you didn't know you had.
