Just a humble programmer looking to share, explore, & learn. My degrees are in Marketing & Economics, not Computer Science, however, have been coding since ~1997 where my 1st e-commerce project used frames to separate navigation/attribute filters — as that was the best my 13yr old brain with no teacher or Google could make work! Who remembers frames, and their popularity in the mid 90’s?
What was the site called? “The Ultimate Fashion” ♂️ Cringe I know, but I started it with my sister, and had a great business idea similar to overstock.com (same time frame and everything). My plan was to sell marked down clothes from the racks of the mall nearby; essentially taking what they’re trying to clearance out and make a profit by being the median channel between customers and manufactures trying to get rid of excess stock. I was 13, so my images weren’t taken of the actual items on the rack, they were from companies like Abercrombie & Fitch — a super popular brand of the time.
My mother didn’t understand the internet, however, and so after I made the site live and showed her, she immediately made me take it down; then proceeded to take me to the police station to try and have them tell me what I was doing was illegal I’ll never forget that — or that I could have been a million/billionaire like Bezos! “Uh, what he’s doing isn’t exactly illegal, just may not be the safest thing for him to be doing these things on the internet” #okboomer
Sadly, because the site was only in production for less than 24hrs, it was never crawled by the internet archives; and, being as this was the 90s, clean installs of Windows 95 was the norm for a kid constantly experimenting on and braking their computer. Then add the fact that backing up data like that wasn’t exactly high priority for a teenager — I did archive important files, but that wasn’t important to me anymore after what my mother did to it. I’ve tried looking many times for even a logo file from the project, maybe one day I’ll get lucky.
