After 30 years of professionally working with computers (and studying them for a dozen years prior to that) I've retired to a life of ... playing with computers. Asimov's robots got me started thinking about AI when I was in Jr. High and from there taught myself about logic gates and cybernetics in general. In High School I was fortunate enough to have a teacher who took a few of us students to Wayne State to try our skills with an IBM 650 using GATE (Generalized Algebraic Translator Extended). After college (and taking the only undergrad course at U of Mich using an IBM 7090) and two years of Peace Core (with a PL/I manual to study) I started working on insurance applications on IBM mainframes. During the 70's I had a computer store, and aside from selling computers I designed a S-100 bus system, interfaced to cash registers, with a display of orders to cooks in a burger chain. After closing the store, I worked on communications applications for a retail chain. My final career was designing and implementing software for automotive engine controllers.
Now I just have fun with Arduino and Raspberry Pi computers. Several projects can be found on my GitHub pages, and my next big project will be a robot to roam the house picking up cat toys and returning them to their home.
