Arthur F. Engoron (born 1948 or 1949[1]) is an American judge known for presiding over the New York civil investigation of the Trump Organization.

Early life

Engoron was born in Queens, New York City.[2] He and his family later moved to East Williston in Nassau County.[1][2] Engoron wrote for the student newspaper at The Wheatley School in Old Westbury, and graduated in 1967.[1]

Engoron received his bachelor's degree from Columbia University. During his time there, he drove a taxi.[1][2] He spent four years as a drummer prior to enrolling at the New York University School of Law,[2] and received his law degree in 1979.[1]

In one court ruling, Engoron revealed he had taken part in "huge, sometimes boisterous, Vietnam War protests."[1][3]

Career

Engoron started his legal career at Olwine, Connelly, Chase, O'Donnell & Weyher, a now-defunct firm in New York City. He then worked for the New York City office of Pryor Cashman from 1981 to 1983, leaving to pursue a musical career. He spent seven years teaching piano and drums.[2] In 1991, he became a law clerk for Michael Schoenfeld,[2][4] an Administrative Law Judge for the Social Security Administration.[5] Engoron has been a member of the American Civil Liberties Union since 1994.[1][3][6]

In 2003, Engoron won an election to join the New York City Civil Court as a judge. In 2013, he was appointed as an acting justice for the Manhattan Supreme Court, and ran unopposed for a permanent position in 2015.[1][2]

On January 11, 2024, the final day of the New York v. Trump trial Engoron was presiding over, a bomb squad was called to the judge's residence.[7]

Personal life

Engoron is a fan of pop culture references, frequently using them in his rulings.[1][8] He has drafted and pitched a screenplay for a historical romantic drama about a Holocaust survivor.[9]

Engoron has been married three times[1][9] and has four children.[1]
