Ernie Bot (Chinese: 文心一言, wénxīn yīyán), full name Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration,[1] is an AI chatbot service product of Baidu, under development since 2019. It is based on a large language model named "Ernie 4.0", announced on October 17, 2023.[2]

Background

On March 20, 2023, Baidu announced on its official WeChat that Wenxin Yiyin cloud service was supposed to be available on March 27, but the launch was delayed to an unknown date.[3] Baidu launched Wenxin Qianfan, an enterprise-level large language model service platform.[4] Wenxin Qianfan includes not only Wenxin Yiyin but also a full set of Baidu's Wenxin Big Model, and the corresponding development tool chain.[5]

Ernie Bot is subject to the Chinese government's censorship regime.[6][7] In public tests with journalists, Ernie Bot refused to answer questions about Xi Jinping, the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre, the Uyghur genocide in Xinjiang, and the 2019–2020 Hong Kong protests.[7][8][9] When queried about the origin of COVID-19, Ernie Bot stated that it originated among American vape users.[7]

History

Ernie Bot was initially released on March 17, 2023, based on "Ernie 3.0 Titan".[10][11][12]

On matters of politics, by contrast, the chatbot is rather quiet. Ernie is confused by questions such as "Who is China's president?" and will tell you the name of Xi Jinping's mother, but not those of his siblings. It draws a blank if asked about the drawbacks of socialism. It often attempts to redirect sensitive conversations by saying: "Let's talk about something else." Ernie's reticence will come as no shock to Chinese users familiar with a heavily censored internet.
