Filip Nguyen (born 14 September 1992) is a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for V.League 1 club Hanoi Police. Born in the Czech Republic, he represents the Vietnam national team.

Club career

Nguyen played youth football with Loko Vltavín and Sparta Prague, joining the latter in 2012.[2] On 20 October 2013, Nguyen appeared in the Sparta first-team squad for the first-team, being an unused substitute for a Czech First League home win over city rivals Dukla Prague.[1] He departed the club in 2015 to play for SK Union Čelákovice.[2] 2016 saw Nguyen complete a move to Czech National Football League side Vlašim.[1] He made his professional debut for Vlašim v. Karviná on 26 March.[1] Forty-two appearances followed across his first three seasons.[1] In February 2018, Slovan Liberec completed the signing of Nguyen; signing until 2021.[3][4]

Cong An Ha Noi

On 28 June 2023, Nguyen signed for V.League 1 club Cong An Ha Noi on a three-year contract.[5][6] Nguyen made his league debut for the club on 2 July 2023, in a 0–1 loss against SHB Da Nang at Hòa Xuân Stadium.[7] His first season with CAHN ended in success, as they won the V.League 1 title.[8]

In December 2023, Nguyen received approval to naturalise as a Vietnamese citizen.[9][10]

International career

Filip Nguyen is eligible to play for Czech Republic or Vietnam at international level.

In July 2019, it was reported that Nguyen was in the process of becoming naturalizsed as a Vietnamese citizen, which would allow him to represent the country's national team for the succeeding 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.[11]

In September 2020, Nguyen received his first call-up to the Czech Republic national team for their UEFA Nations League match against Scotland on 7 September. Due to positive SARS-CoV-2 tests in the previous Czech squad, all players and the coaching staff which faced Slovakia on 4 September had to be replaced.[12][13]

On 6 December 2023, Nguyen announced on his Facebook page that he had successfully completed his Vietnamese naturlization, thus making him eligible to play for Vietnam.[9] Later in the month, he received his first call up to the Vietnam national team and was named in the preliminary squad for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.[14]

On 9 January 2024, he made his international debut, playing 60 minutes in Vietnam's 1–2 defeat against Kyrgyzstan. Later, he featured in Vietnam's 26-men squad for the Asian Cup.[15]

Personal life

Filip Nguyen was born in Prague to a Vietnamese father and a Czech mother. His father is from Haiphong.

In August 2021, Filip married his long-term girlfriend Aneta Ngo.[16] Aneta gave birth to the couple's first son, Filip Jr, in 2020.[17]
