TitleChief Technology Officer

Mira Murati (born 16 December 1988) is an Albanian[1][2] mechanical engineer, researcher and tech leader who has been serving as the chief technology officer of Open AI, which she joined in 2018.[3] She contributes to the company's mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.[4][5][6]

Writing about Murati for the 2023 Time 100, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said "she has a demonstrated ability to assemble teams with technical expertise, commercial acumen, and a deep appreciation for the importance of mission." He went on to say "As a result Mira has helped build some of the most exciting AI technologies we’ve ever seen, including ChatGPT, DALL-E, and GPT-4."[7]

Early life and education

Murati was born on 16 December 1988[8] in Vlorë, Albania.[9] She was 2 years old when the communist regime fell and all the uncertainty and changes that occurred in that period pushed her to be passionate about the truth that comes after the sciences, especially math. Her passion and interest for math continued throughout her school years where she participated in many Olympiads and math competitions. At the age of 16, Murati won a scholarship and went to high school at the Pearson United World College of the Pacific on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, from which she graduated in 2005.[10][11] For her undergraduate education, Murati attended Colby College and Dartmouth College.[12][13][14]

Career at OpenAI

Murati joined OpenAI in 2018 as a researcher, later becoming its chief technology officer, leading the company's work on ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Codex,[15][16] while overseeing the company's research, product and safety teams.[17] Murati is responsible for overseeing the technical advancements and direction of OpenAI's various projects, including the development of advanced AI models and tools. Her work has been instrumental in the building, progress and deployment of some of OpenAI's most notable products such as the Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT) series of language models. Her work also includes pushing the boundaries of machine learning while advocating for the responsible and ethical use of AI technologies.

On 17 November 2023, Murati briefly took over as interim chief executive officer of OpenAI following the abrupt removal of Sam Altman.[18][19][20][5] She was replaced by Emmett Shear three days later, who was in turn replaced when Altman was reinstated five days after being ousted (after which Murati returned to her role as CTO).[21][22]

Previous Career

Murati briefly worked for Zodiac Aerospace before joining electric car company Tesla in 2013, where she was instrumental in the development of the Model X. From 2016 until joining OpenAI in 2018, she worked for augmented reality start-up Leap Motion (now Ultraleap).[15][23][24][25]
