I have the following problem. I want to add a toolbar to the preferencesActivity that is generated by Android Studio, but I am using NoActionBar as my app theme (since I have a custom toolbar in my activites).

The generated Preferences Activity has no layout file in which I could add that toolbar. Is there a way to set it anyway? (In this case even the standard toolbar would work, since I only need the back button and title to show)

Create PreferenceActivitys own style and apply it in the android:theme attribute in the manifest. Or if you do not have certain reasons to use PreferenceActivity use regular Activity or AppCompatActivity instead and add PreferenceFragment in it.

You can create Custom Toolbar using android.support.v7.widget.Toolbar widget.
For example, create toolbar_layout as below:
