How to get the current file type at filedialog in tkinter

Question

How to get the current file type at filedialog in tkinter ?

I want to get the current filetype to help me add .gif or .png at the end when it's not? for example:

if not new.path_save.endswith('.png') and path_save.currentfiletype == "png":
    new.path_save += ".png"

Help.

You can use typevariable option to get the selected file type:

    type_var = tk.StringVar()
    new.path_save = filedialog.asksaveasfilename(initialdir="/",

                                                            ("JPEG", '*.jpg'),("GIF", '*.gif'),

                                                 typevariable=type_var)
    if new.path_save:
        file_type = type_var.get()

you can use now if condition with replace for your requirement.

address= address.replace(Path(address).suffix,'.png') if Path(address).suffix != '.png' else address

yeah, but you don't understand me. this is not working while the filedialog running this working after filedialog and that's not very helpfull because i know how to add `.png` but I don't know how to get that extension to add `.png` or `.gif`at the end. – Shihab Jan 26 '21 at 18:59
